I recently went to The Highland Angus Steak House in Southgate for a family meal. I’ve been meaning to go for years with a friend but it always looked dark and not particularly busy to indicate it was popular with the locals whenever we went passed so I opted against it. There were 9 of us so the party size wasn’t large enough to put the restaurants kitchen staff or waiting staff under pressure and there were empty seats but for the time and day it had a reasonable number of customers. The restaurant has recently been refurbished and looks a lots brighter and cleaner than it had in the past making it much more inviting although I must say carpet in a restaurant is always a no no as it can be a breeding ground for bacteria, euuuuuggggghhhhhhh!!!
We placed our drinks and food orders and chatted whilst we waited. I had asked for a fresh mint tea and was told by the male server that he would check if they had fresh mint for this. After a further 3 reminders I finally got my tea approximately 20 to 25 minutes later. It also took 15 minutes and two reminders to get water which was not very impressive. The food took a while to come too although it wasn’t overly excessive as with the drinks thankfully. The food was a mixed bag. I ordered the lamb shish for my girls to share and the meat was on the dry side when I tried it but they ate it never the less. Another member of the party also ordered the same but as a grown adult male he found the amount of meat inadequate especially when comparing the size and price with other local restaurants that serve the same.
The Beef stroganoff came in a frying pan (which was a little worse for wear) and was served over the rice at the table. I was informed that this was ‘not bad’ and it seemed like a good sized portion.

I had chosen the fillet steak with a side of spinach with garlic and also some black peppercorn sauce.

The size of the steak fillet was good for a restaurant and they had cooked it to my specification perfectly. The spinach was lovely and the black peppercorn sauce was nice but had a touch too much black pepper (this is relative according to taste) and there was plenty of sauce for the steak size.
Check out the edges of the red lettuce, a bit of browning, not so attractive in my opinion.
Overall I enjoyed my dish although I don’t think some of the others that attended were as pleased as I was by their choice of dish. The food here is ok and as it is a steak restaurant I must say the steak was great. Also I will add that the welcome when we initially arrived by a person who I would assume is the owner was nice and friendly. The two waiting staff were a bit slow and could have smiled. As we paid the bill the manager / owner came out and gave us kinder eggs and lollies for the children which was a nice touch and the children were very excited about it.
I am sure that they will ask to visit again because of this but if I do go back I think I would stick to the steak which I know they do well.

lovely looking dinners and large portions, thanks for the review.
The steak portion and Beef Stroganoff were a good size.
looks like a great place to eat with the family xx
The kids enjoyed themselves, I’d suggest for adults to go for steaks.
That peppercorn sauce looks lovely and thick – whenever I make it at home it’ so thin & pathetic.
Food looks awesome cant wait to be near another Angus steak house and try it havent been to one in a few years now!
The steak was great, nice and lean and a good size.
