It’s best to start educating children from a young age.  The sooner you can begin the more they will of course know when they reach school age.  It makes sense and is stating the obvious so why do so many people not bother?  I am not implying you duct tape your child to a table and force them to learn although it does seems like a feasible option for my girls sometimes who seem to find any and every opportunity to run off and play instead of doing their work (OMG how stressful).  I was watching a video of a young child who was about a year and a half old whose parents taught it to understand /recognize words on flash cards.  The parent would say the word and the child would find the correct card.  This can also be adapted to include the actual items if you prefer.  This is something easily taught with repetition and a little patience and is something that I would love to try and do with Mr Squishy when I get a chance.  On the plus side for me at the moment I can talk for Britain.  Not as traumatic for a child to endure as one would believe as such verbal diarrhoea has its benefits!!! (Dad please do not comment on this post, thank you x)  Thanks to my continuous nattering about just about anything to myself and Mr Squishy he is now able to understand soooooooooooooo much.  He can get his shoes and coat when asked, close doors, put his changing mat etc. on the bed for a nappy change, put his milk bottle in the fridge, his nappy in the bin, brush his hair, take something to mummy, daddy or his sisters, sit in his chair for meal time and more.

Mr Squishy is eager to learn and to experience new things.  He loved his alphabet book that we got a little while back and I was excited to hear that the company Itsyourstory also has a numbers book that covers one to ten which is perfect for Squishy now he is almost one and a half years old.

The children love to sit and listen to mummy read in bed and they also find it hilarious to see themselves in  storybooks.  When Mr Squishy’s numbers book arrived and we sat down to look through both my daughters roared with laughter.  They loved the book and seeing Mr Squishy’s face on each of the pages.

He loved seeing the pictures of himself (he also finds it fun playing peek-a-boo in the mirror so he knows what he looks like).  Here he is showing you the first picture on the cover of the book.We had a personal message added at the start of the book as it will act as a lovely keep-sake for our little man when he is older.Here are just a few of the adorable pictures that we discovered in the book.As you can see the number features clearly on each page and is also written in word form which can be used to help older children learn too as the book is targeted at ages 2 to 5 years old. The number is incorporated into a sentence to bring each of the pages to life and the child’s name has been added into some of the adventures too to add to the fun.

Repetition of these numbers in number form at first is best and can help children to recognise them. Initially start going through pages in numerical order and once the child begins to recognise the numbers mix it up a bit to test their recognition of each.  Make it into a game so that children find it fun and you will find they will recognise / get to know their numbers quickly (depending on their age).  You don’t need to spend a long time going over the numbers, it’s all about repetition and familiarisation.  A simple 5 to 10 minutes a day can work wonders and won’t impact on busy lifestyles either.  The book is available in paperback and hardback form although I would strongly recommend the later as a precaution to reduce the risk of damage to the book by young children.
