Times are hard for the average household at the moment, as things are getting ever-more expensive. For many, the day job just isn’t quite cutting it. In order to afford those little luxuries, people are looking for ways to earn extra money. But how can you create a secondary income? Here are Six Ways To Build a Secondary Income you can try yourself:
Six Ways To Build a Secondary Income
Blogging
Starting a blog has been a popular pastime for decades now, as the increased popularity of the internet gave people a new platform to share their lives, experiences and passions to a larger audience than ever before. For many people, blogging also represents an opportunity to generate additional income, in a number of ways. Blogs which are successful in drawing a relatively large audience may be able to secure sponsorships from brands, earning money for including affiliate links or product placement. Even new blogs can make money from banner adverts, meaning anyone can convert an interest or even a memoir into a source of money.
Freelancing
You can also use your skills more deliberately and start a second career as a freelancer. By using skills you’ve cultivated over the course of your day job, you can create more money for yourself in your free time by offering your services to others; online platforms like People Per Hour are perfect for this, letting you advertise yourself and get clients while barely having to lift a finger.
Starting a Business
Of course, you can go even further and set up your own business entirely. One of the magical things about starting a business from scratch is that you can do whatever you want. With freelancing, it makes sense to use proven skills you’ve already built a career on, but your new business could be a way for you to monetise a hobby. If you’ve recently picked up baking, why not sell cakes and bread? Or if you’re a crafty soul, use Etsy to sell your creations.
Investing
If this all sounds like a bit too much work, and really you’re after something a little more passive as a way to gain a little extra spending money, look no further than investing. Savings accounts have been a bit redundant for years now, with low interest rates essentially meaning your money is stagnating, perhaps even losing value. By investing your money in a business, you can earn passive income as your investment grows in value with said business’ growth. A popular way for regular people, or ‘retail investors’, to get on board with this is using an “investment fund”, where your money is pooled with other people’s money and split across several businesses, meaning you can expect a stable level of interest and in the event that a company doesn’t perform as well, the majority of your money is unaffected!
Trading
Of course, some may want to be a bit more in control of their investments and by taking control, there is the possibility to make even more money! Trading, using dedicated retail trading platforms, can grow your initial investments through the sale and purchase of shares in different companies in order to generate a profit. While occasionally risky, it is a hands-on way to engage with your money, and potentially create additional income.
Selling Items
Lastly, selling unwanted items in your home can be a surprisingly lucrative way to create extra spending money! Simply set up an account on an auction site like eBay, and list various items you’re tired of, or don’t have space for anymore. Just selling a few items a week can pay for your food shop and if you get the selling bug, you could start buying things to sell on to make extra money.
