Fish & Chips at London Road

I was devastated when Sargasso Sea Restaurant in Winchmore Hill Closed down.  Unquestionably the BEST Seafood Restaurant in North London, possibly even the whole of London this restaurant offered a range of meals to suit all tastes that were not focused only on Seafood but ensured each dish that left the kitchen was to the highest standard.  So you can imagine I was overjoyed on hearing that the people that had run this amazing restaurant had opened Fish & Chips at London Road in my local area.  Life seemed to get in the way of me visiting to sample the culinary delights that the new restaurant had to offer but finally I made it!!!

I was not in the least surprised to see this:

We arrived early for lunch so the restaurant was not full.

I will add there were people seated at tables at the side and behind where I was taking the photo.  It is always encouraging to see a nice clean restaurant and all I can say is I would loooove to borrow their cleaner.  The obligatory toilet shot, see, it’s all spotless!  I had considered also visiting the kitchen but then decided against it as I would end up staying in there to learn how to make some of their great looking food I had seen on the way in.

The staff were very friendly and attentive yet they did not hover.  The children were well received and catered for, colourful plastic cups were supplied for their drinks which was fortunate as we did have a couple of accidents.

The wait for the food was not excessive as it was freshly made and we excitedly tucked in to our starters.

Pan Fried Prawns with Garlic Butter
I didn’t try the prawns but I did try the oil but to be honest couldn’t really taste the garlic.  I have it on good authority though that the prawns were perfectly cooked.

Cod and Haddock Fish Cakes with a Tomato Concasse.
I managed to get a little bite of one of these and can report back that there was a substantial amount of fish in the fishcakes which was great, I find that some places bulk them up with cheaper alternatives so generally a large amount of mashed potato to save on cost but these were great.  A rich flavourful sauce accompanies these or so I am told.

Seared King Scallops with Streaky Bacon.
Cooked to perfection these scallops were gorgeous accompanied with a streaky bacon that was crunchy but not burnt and not overly fatty.

Cod / Haddock and Chips

The majority of the group ordered either Cod or Haddock and chips.

You can see that they had used lovely chunky pieces of fish and the outer batter looks crunchy because it genuinely was.

Scampi and Chips
The kids and I ate this and thoroughly enjoyed it.  The chips were perfectly cooked as was the scampi.  The oil used was undeniably fresh for both.

The coating on the Scampi was light and crisp and in a word perfect!

Yummy mummy, this is good!

The biggest chip eeeeeevvvvveeeeerrrrrr!!!!!!!

Apart from the shortage of garlic in the Prawn starter I could not find any fault with this restaurant.  They have a range of reasonably priced meals and also a children’s menu.  Good news for those that go with their little angels on a Sunday or Monday you will get a free children’s meal with every purchase of a main meal from the adult menu.

Fish & Chips at London Road is on Facebook and Twitter so you can follow them for updates and special offers. There is a designated takeaway section and for those wishing to eat in I would advise you too book, this restaurant is popular because it is good!

I would like to take the opportunity to say a special thank you to Flavio and Jesus for looking after us so well and making my first visit there all that I would have hoped it would be.  I intend to return very soon.
