For example, the Rolex GMT-Master is responsible for bringing one of the most practical complications to the forefront of a mechanical watch. The ability to track multiple time zones. Created at the behest of PAN AM pilots, Rolex developed a 24-hour hand that helped the pilots track the second time zone. Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 6542

The Ref. 6542 is the cornerstone of the GMT-Master’s history. Introduced almost 70 years ago, the Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 6542 introduced a new aesthetic to the world that became the blueprint for the GMT watch category. This design was produced from 1954 to 1959, and was based on the Turn-O-Graph (Ref. 6202) but with a different bezel and GMT hand.
The watch came with a 38mm stainless steel Oyster case, a Bakelite bezel, featuring the iconic blue and red colour, and a glossy black gilt dial. The red and blue colours on the Bakelite bezel were darker than they would be on the later aluminium bezels. After a few years, Rolex replaced the Bakelite with aluminium, making the surviving original GMT-Master Ref. 6542 models with Bakelite bezels exceptionally sought-after.
During its 5-year production run, Rolex used Calibre 1036, 1065 and 1066 movements to power the Ref. 6542. While the Ref. 6542 came in multiple case and dial variants during this time, the main dial variations appreciated by collectors were the ones with small lume plots and oversized lume plots.
All in all, the Ref. 6542 is a rare Rolex prized by collectors.

Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 1675

The GMT-Master Ref. 1675 is probably the most popular. Produced from 1959 to 1980, it is one of the longest-produced references, with historical importance and charm. This model solves the issues faced by GMT-Masters with Bakelite bezels and looks fantastic. It is the first GMT-Master to sit in a 40mm case with crown guards.
Throughout its production, Rolex released varied dials (glossy and matte), bracelets (Oyster and Jubilee), several bezel options, and three metal options. While initially Rolex released the GMT-Master Ref. 1675 with a Calibre 1565 movement, a glossy dial, and pointed crown guards, it was later upgraded to a higher-beat Calibre 1575 in the mid-1960s, along with square crown guards, a matte dial featuring printed tritium indices, and a hacking function.
The Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 1675 is excellent for everyday wear and ideal for both novice and seasoned vintage Rolex collectors. In most cases, collectors consider the Ref. 1675 a great
investment that fetches an impressive value if you decide to sell your Rolex.

Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 1675/8

The GMT-Master Ref. 1675/8 is one of the most beloved references. While most of us are accustomed to seeing the GMT-Master Ref. 1675 in stainless steel, Rolex produced only a few in yellow gold. As a result, these gold GMT-Masters provide excellent resale value. The Ref. 1675/8 is one in which the whole body is wrapped in precious metal, not just the case or the bracelet.
This 40mm Rolex GMT-Master appears stunning in a yellow gold case and gold jubilee bracelet. It has a brown dial and bezel, with the gold hour markers designed in conical shapes, creating a look known as a ‘nipple’ dial. This dramatic finish made the watches stand out. The watch combines practicality, style, and some added bling to your outfit.

Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 16758

The Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 16758 is for those who prefer a dressy appearance. This is an updated version of the Ref. 1675, and the watch comes with a yellow gold jubilee bracelet, which greatly
enhances its visual appeal.
Rolex started transitioning the 4-digit GMT to a 5-digit reference in 1981 and introduced modern features like an updated movement with quickset date functionality. The GMT-Master Ref. 16758
models used both matte and glossy dials and were produced in full yellow gold and two-tone, like the Ref. 16753.
The vintage Rolex GMT-Master Ref. 16758 is undoubtedly a very sleek and stylish sports watch. It is nestled in an appropriate 40mm yellow gold case with a matching yellow gold jubilee bracelet. The 18ct yellow gold rotating bezel has a warm anodised aluminium inlay, perfectly complementing the rest of the body. This gold variation of the GMT-Master may continue to rise in price long after you purchase, making it a well executed investment.

Rolex GMT-Master II Ref. 16760

Last on the list is the Rolex GMT-Master II Ref. 16760, lovingly referred to as ‘The Fat Lady’. This particular GMT-Master model played a pivotal role in the model’s catalogue as it was the first that
separated the 12-hour and 24-hour hands, allowing the wearer to read up to three time zones with the help of the bezel. This was possible with the help of the new Calibre 3085. As you can expect, Rolex used a thicker case to incorporate this new movement, resulting in the nickname ‘Fat Lady’. That’s not it. The Ref. 16760 was the first GMT-Master to come with the now highly desirable ‘Coke’ bezel, which features iconic red and black colours. Additional updates in this model included a glossy black dial with white gold surrounding hour markers, a sapphire crystal, and a semi-quickset date via the 12-hour hand. It was offered in both Oyster and Jubilee bracelets.
