Exploring Moral Values with Your Child

(Collaborative) In this post, we look at ways of Exploring Moral Values with Your Child. It is important for parents to explore moral values with children as early as possible. This will teach your child the difference between right and wrong and help them to understand how to treat others. Learning about moral values will also allow your child to develop crucial social and communication skills which will benefit them both at school and into adulthood. In order to teach your child about moral values, it is essential that you set a good example and role model kindness, good manners, and respect at home. You should also remember to praise your child when you see them demonstrating good moral behaviour. It’s not just at home that children learn about moral values so it is important to be careful when selecting a good school for them.

Exploring Moral Values with Your Child

Being Helpful and Kind

One of the most important moral values you can teach your child is to be kind. Teach your child to always treat others as they wish to be treated and to respect other people’s beliefs and opinions, even if they are different from their own. Encourage your child to be fair, considerate and helpful to both adults and children. Refer to people they know that do this, people they see on the media, superheroes etc. Children like to emulate those they like and admire.

Listening to Others

Talk to your child about why it is important to be polite and listen to others. This is particularly important in the classroom, where they must show respect to their teacher by listening carefully and following instructions. Practice at home by reminding your child not to interrupt when others are talking.

Accepting Responsibility

Disputes with friends are common at school and learning how to resolve these issues is an important life lesson. Therefore, if you have a disagreement with your child, be sure to talk things through and apologise for getting angry or frustrated. This will teach your child how to treat others and how to accept responsibility.

Being Respectful

Encourage your child to be respectful at school. They can demonstrate this by being on time to class, helping to tidy up after a lesson, and being courteous and polite to teachers. If your child’s school has their own list of values or a school motto, it can be useful to discuss this with your child and help them to understand it.

Reinforce Good Behaviour

Finally, don’t forget to reinforce your child’s good behaviour with praise when they demonstrate these moral values. They are far more likely to repeat them if they can see it makes you proud. For example, tell them ‘well done for being kind’ if you notice them including their younger sibling when they play.
