Rosacea and How to Treat it

Skin conditions can be quite traumatic for those living with them.  Even worse are those that are seen on the face as they can seriously damage the sufferers confidence.  Rosacea is a skin condition that affects parts of the face with symptoms that include flushing, hyper reactivity (vessels dilate when the skin is touched when touched), spots / pustules (in those with inflammatory rosacea) and more.  It commonly affects 1 in 10 people in the UK who are normally middle aged although can also be seen from the early teens.  In some cases it is mild although if left untreated it can become considerably worse.  It is believed that certain factors may cause this condition including sun damage, abnormal immune reactions resulting in inflammation, skin mites and genetics although these are not definitive.  The main areas normally affected are the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead .

Self Help

There are various self help tips for Rosacea including avoiding products that irritate the skin further, using products that are suitable for sensitive skin, you can use make up to hide the redness but in some cases sufferers just want the condition dealt with and I must say I don’t blame them with the emotional stress it can cause.

Treatment for Rosacea

Although there are non known cures there are various treatments available.

You can get topical and oral treatments to help with the bumps and also the pustules that may form.  There is also a gel called Brimonidine Tartrate which is relatively new but can help restrict the dilation of the facial blood vessels although the side effects of itchiness and burning don’t sound very appealing.

Another form of Rosacea Treatment is ‘Intense Pulsed Light’ (IPL).  This will normally involve a course of treatments depending on the severity and involves pulses of light waves which are precisely calibrated to target the haemoglobin in your blood vessels.  The light travels through the skin and is absorbed by the haemoglobin in the blood resulting in damage to the blood vessel wall.  This then triggers the body’s natural response to break down and remove the damaged tissue.  New cells will then grow and replace those in the problem area with clearer, better looking skin.

Such treatment is available at the Pulse Light Clinic.  Their treatment works on bumps, and pimples, redness, dietary and lifestyle causes and can be carried out on all skin types.  The company combines a consultation with a nutritionist to help the advise the sufferer of the necessary lifestyle and dietary changes and this is combined with the IPL treatment by qualified practitioners.

You can see it in action here:

Side Effects

The treatment can cause pain although it is generally nothing that would require an anaesthetic.  Patients may experience bruising, swelling and redness although this too is normally mild.

The before and after photo’s from treated clients are very impressive and show a significant difference.  For a sufferer the change can be considerable and the emotional relief that comes with not having this condition to deal with on a daily basis makes treatment more than worthwhile.

Two of my mum friends from school have rosacea and they were discussing how they combat it the other day, so this is a great article to pass on to them. One of my friends were saying people assume she’s an alcoholic because of the redness and she’s desperate as nothing has worked for her so far – I’ll be sending on to them!

I was not familiar with this skin condition until a few weeks back. I must say Rosacea suffers seem to have it bad because all treatments seem to have some sort of side effects which can put one off but it’s also looking at the lesser evil right

That’s very true. It’s an individual choice and the severity of the condition can influence a decision.
