There are all sorts of different ways that you can try to keep cool when the weather is hot. Here we look at a varied range of options you can try. I’m sure you’ll find plenty that will work well for you.

Items That Can Be Added to a Freezer

Fill a hot water bottle with cold water, stick it in the freezer. When frozen, you can wrap this in a towel and take it to bed with you. This helps keep you and your bed cool in hot weather for hours. If you do this, it’s important to keep an eye of the rubber as this can start developing cracks as a result of freezing over time. If cracks appear then it’s time to throw this away.

A more unusual option is putting uncooked rice in a sock. Place this in the freezer during the day. In about 90 minutes it is cold enough to use as an ice pack, or an alternative to a frozen hot water bottle.

Cuddle a freezer block wrapped in a towel. Always good if you don’t have a hot water bottle.

Put your sheets and pillowcases in a bag in the freezer till just before bed.

Some put their Pj’s in the fridge or freezer. This gives and instant cooling effect, although on it’s own won’t last long. Combine this with other options to keep cooler for longer. These will warm up over time, which is important to be aware of.

The other alternative is wear less. Thin lightweight, breathable material can make a difference. Or, you can wear just underwear, or even simply go commando. It al depends on how hot it gets.

You can buy foot ice pack slippers online. These are a great way to cool you down. The great thing is that they stay cool for a few hours and they can be worn without socks. They are reusable which is great. These can also be used for various foot injuries.

Products You Can Purchase

Oscillating fans can work wonders in some cases although some are noisier than others. These electric fans rotate from side to side and will cover a wider area with the generated air flow. These are inexpensive to run and can be quite effective depending on the temperature.

Ceiling Fans in  the bedroom are something more and more are adding. These push down air, creating a breeze and stabilise the room temperature.

Have an air conditioning unit installed. A pricey option, and it also depends on how much space you have in your bedroom.

Run the air con for a while in the evening. It will keep rooms cool for a while before needing to be put on again provided windows and doors to hotter rooms that won’t be used are kept shut.

As well as the suggestions above with frozen items, you can actually buy large ice packs online. These come in varying sizes depending on your requirements and can be used on the body, normally with a towel between.

A long floor fan or smaller table top fan can come in handy for cooling at night.

Sweat wicking pj’s can be bought from a variety of places. These help the body regulate its temperature and wick away moisture reducing the chance of you waking at night.

A cool gel pillow or foam pillow can stay cool for up to 12 hours. These can help in the battle to stay cool at night during hot weather.

Pet Products You Can Also Use

Dog Cool pads from B&M/Wilko can be put under the sheets to help cool you. Not the best though if you run hot normally but many swear by this trick.

The dog cooling mats can also be folded and put inside a pillow case or rolled and placed under the feet. Both options can be quite effective.

Other Options

Put a bath towel in your washing machine on the rinse and spin cycle. Then lay it over you when you go to bed with a fan on. The towel really helps to cool you down. Over the course of the night, this will warm up so combined so with the fan, you’ll stay cooler for much longer.

Some will wear wet socks to bed. The idea is that this will cool the body down. During the course of the night, these too will warm up unless you combine it with a fan.

A silk or satin pillow case normally feels cool to the touch. They also reduce moisture loss from the skin and hair.

Open the loft hatch (if you have one). It can make a difference. Just be warned, there may be all manner of wildlife hidden in there from mice, rats, birds, to moths and eight legged beasties!!!

I find keeping my windows and curtains closed during the day and opening them in the evening. This keeps the heat out and keeps the indoor air cooler.

If you have a spare room, you could consider you and your partner sleeping in separate beds. This reduces the amount of heat that builds up in the bed and the room.

Consider buying sheets that will keep you cool if you don’t already have any. You will find that sheets made from bamboo, cotton and linen are the best options to consider.

Simply ditch the duvet. This reduces the amount of layers within which heat can build up and as a result helps keep you cooler.

I need to keep this in mind as it can get hot sometimes. I don’t like to keep the AC too low as it can get pricey, so I do try to do other things. I have fans and I might need a satin pillowcase that you mentioned. I hate being all sweaty!

I typically like to use a cooling blanket or area fan. Although, nothing beats a cracked window when it’s cool enough outside but too hot indoors.

I tend to use a lighter top sheet with a blanket instead of a heavy duvet when it is hot. I am very lucky that we also have a little air conditioning unit, it really does do the trick on hot nights, just having that cool air blowing around the room!

Sometimes, if I’m really feeling hot, I’ll take one of those freezer ice packs and let it defrost a little. Then, I just sleep with it on my torso to cool my core.
