A Guide To Hair Removal For Men

Hair Removal For Men (collaborative post)

Body hair can cause a great deal of distress and can cause people to lack confidence in their appearance.  As a result, there is a high demand for products and services that can remove hair whether it’s temporary or permanent.

Men and women alike are always looking for the best ways to remove unwanted hair.  It may be due to personal preference or even their job; model, bodybuilder, athlete etc.  We live in a society that takes far more care in their appearance than ever.  However, they are also more critical and judgemental about the appearance of others. Unwanted hair can make us feel self-conscious and can even influence people’s desire to go out.  As a result, people are ready to spend their time and money to have treatments to remove this hair.

So What options are available for men looking to be fuzz free?

Non Permenant Hair Removal

All of these methods will require the use of exfoliators.  You will also need to use skin-soothing products after to ease irritation.

Shaving

This non-permanent form of hair removal gives immediate results but hair regrowth is quick.  This means you’ll need to shave regularly.  Care is needed to prevent razor burn and cuts.  It’s best to buy an electric razor rather than the disposable plastic ones available.  This helps us all cut down on the amount of plastic waste that ends up in the environment.  It’s a popular form of hair removal and it is important to use a good razor.

Waxing

This is more painful than shaving but leaves longer-lasting results.  Hairs are pulled up from the root so take much longer to regrow.  This can be done at a salon or with a home kit.  The remains of the wax needs to be removed from the skin and a soothing product applied.

Epilating

As with waxing, epilating does hurt.  This too can give far longer-lasting effects than shaving.  Both epilating and waxing result in hairs growing back softer and finer than if you had shaved.  Similar to waxing it can take a while to do when hair removal is required in various areas around the body.

Permanent Hair Removal For Men

Laser hair removal is popular amongst men.  Rather than having to deal with stubble, ingrowing hairs where follicles can become infected resulting in spots, laser removal is a far more convenient option.  It is a lengthy and costly process but the benefits far outweigh these.  You’ll find some companies will provide a package to help bring costs down.  Imagine never having to shave again.  The amount of time saved is obviously of great benefit.  Also, one needs to take into consideration the products that are no longer required to remove hair such as razors, shaving creams, aftershave balms etc.

Although there are home products it can be easier to have treatments performed by a dermatologist in a clinic.  There are numerous specialist clinics that can assist.  Do your homework, look for online reviews etc to see what others thought of the service provided by the company you choose.

Prior to a session, you’ll expect to have an initial consultation.  Here they will determine how suitable you are for treatment.  This will depend on your skin and hair colouring.  From there they will have an idea of approximately how many sessions you will require over a certain time frame for the results to be permanent.

Next is the treatment.  Intense pulsed light (IPL) is used.  This destroys the hair follicles within the skin.  This results in the hair growth cycle being disrupted.  Some regrowth is expected but this finer, lighter and thus less noticeable.  With continued treatment, this will stop regrowing.

This treatment often does not have any side effects, but men with sensitive or broken skin may experience slight pain which will stop once the treatment is complete.

very useful guide. I know a lot of men want to get rid of hair (because it doesn’t look good if there is too few of it) but are shy to find out how or go to specialist (surely it comes from experience of living where I live)

    1. admin

Thanks Lyosha for your comment. It has grown in popularity amongst men.

This is a good review of the topic but my husband likes to keep his natural look for now. i will try and convince him to shave or get permanent hair removal as an option.

  6. Amber Myers

I’ll have to show my husband, ha. Granted he’s never been a super hairy person thank goodness. I know I have been wanting to try laser removal.

I’d never considered that men would like to remove hair as much as women, maybe I need to get my head out of the dark ages!

My fiancé often asks if I think he should wax his chest hair but I really love it, I said yes once and his face dropped!

It’s great that there are options accessible for both sexes x

  9. Rebecca Smith

  10. Sarah Bailey

I have to admit I’ve never thought much about how men remove hair – Ash has quite long hair and a beard. It is amazing how many choices they have as well.

  11. Pam Wattenbarger

Most articles and blog posts that I have seen discussing hair removal focus only on the women, but it’s important to talk about it from a male perspective as well! I know of a few different men that are self-conscious of their body hair and would love to learn about how to address it. However, with society treating that like a ‘women’s issue’ it’s hard to take that first step. Thank you for starting the conversation.

  15. Nikki Wayne

Thanks for the tips, I still prefer shaving for it doesn’t hurt and very affordable.

  16. Mayuri

This is such a useful post! I know guys going for shaving more than waxing as it hurts less. I have not met a guy who has gone for laser hair removal as yet.

For me I do a bit of a mixture, certain areas I shave, some I wax, but I do also need to get back into laser as well. I used a wax strip on Luke’s chest the other week just to see and it was crazy looking at a bald patch, he wasn’t quite as amused x

  24. Ash

Although a lot of men won’t admit, I know they do want to remove their body hair and this is a good post guiding them on what to do.

  25. Di Hickman

All the same issues as women but Men aren’t judged for having body hair. Can’t wait till opinions change and womens body hair becomes as acceptable as mens!

  26. Khushboo

  27. Jess Howliston

Such a useful post, I know that we often talk about hair removal etc for women but there isn’t as much focused on men so this is great! I would love to be able to afford laser hair removal as I hate shaving and am too much of a wimp for waxing LOL! x

    1. admin

Ha, waxing is way too painful. I won’t do that either!

  28. Jenny

    1. admin

Honestly, it isn’t something many would even have considered 10 years back. It’s grown in popularity over the last five or so years.
