Create an Inviting Living Room

There are various simple ways that you can consider when working to create an inviting living room. The living room is one of the most popular and frequently used rooms in the home. It is a room where we will often will sit and spend time with family and friends. It’s also a room where we go to relax and drink a cup of tea or watch tv. It’s an extremely important room and as a result, should be treated as such. Its appearance can affect our mental health so it makes sense that we take great care when we look to create an inviting living room.

Declutter

When we look into a room we instantly notice how much clutter there is. Having an excessive number of items within a room whether it’s furniture, decorative items, or anything else can reduce the appeal of a room and have a negative impact on our mental health. The first thing you need to consider is reducing the amount of clutter. We often have more items than we need in our homes, by decluttering and tidying up what is left over we can create a room that is more aesthetically pleasing and inviting.

Make use of under bed storage, cupboard space, and even space under a sofa to tuck away items that you don’t use constantly. Items not used in the space of approximately 6 months can often been given away or sold depending on their condition and if they have sentimental value.

Lighting

Changing your lighting can be a great way to elevate your space. Lighting can be very important for any room. It needs to be something that works well specifically for that room and you may find you need to differ lighting options. The light you need in a room depends on the time of day and also the activities that often occur. Most often a living room will need good lighting that will come from both natural light and ceiling lights. Dimmable ceiling lights can be a great idea. In addition, you can add lamps for extra light. It helps to be able to adjust the light in the room from high, to medium or low colour to create a different feel and mood.

Plants

Plants make a lovely addition to a room. They can be added to any room in the home although don’t be fooled into thinking they will clean the air. Due to air movement, this isn’t something that really happens at a fast enough rate to have any value. Plan can enhance the look of a room and add a lovely splash of colour too. They also have a positive effect on our mental health, boosting our mood, and reducing anxiety, depression, and stress levels. They can even help boost our creativity.

Candles

Candles are ideal for creating a calming environment, creating mood lighting, and of course adding a gorgeous aroma. When selecting a candle you could consider one that comes in a simple holder design or something far more decorative and colourful. These can be arranged amongst plants on a windowsill, mantlepiece, or on a prominent coffee table to create an inviting and relaxed appearance. Candle scents can also be important.

Diffusers / Wax Burners

Diffusers and wax burners are also great ways to get a scent of your choice into a room. As well as adding a fragrance they can look pretty too. What you choose depends on your personal preference. You might also let the size of the item influence your decision depending on how much space you have available. A great smelling living room can make it far more inviting and easier to relax in.

A Rug

It’s amazing how different a room can look when you add a few homely touches. A nice thick fluffy rug is a good addition to a living room. It can be used to add extra comfort, colour, texture, and make a room feel and look so much more cosy and inviting.  A rug can be added to any floor type, from stone to wood, and even carpeted living rooms. The difference can be so much more aesthetically pleasing with a rug than without provided you are careful with your selection.

Cushions and Throws

Just as a rug can add a soft texture to a room and help create a far more cosy environment so can cushions and throws. Make use of faux fur cushions with a colour that suits your interior but contrasts against the sofa. You could even mix it up using two different colours that match the room colours. Throws can also be useful here, they add colour, texture, comfort and warmth. Play around with colours to create a different mood and feel to a room and for a pleasant change.

  45. Wendy Lam-Vechi

My husband always does a massive decluttering every time someone comes to our house. I like to clean as I go along but I do not dare to touch his stuff in case it goes missing and I get the blame. And on that morning before guests come, the candles come out, wax burners are lit and all the cushions hidden under our sofa bed are neatly lined up and we’re good to go. I actually love having guests over just because our house gets to look nice for one day before it goes back to having toys everywhere and bits of cereal in every corner of the house.

  46. claire woods

I do have some stuff which my son keeps in the lounge but really should be in his bedroom.
