The average household has 4 people and around 13 electronic appliances including fridges, tv’s, laptops. Although these have become more energy efficient in recent years, there are still ways to make savings.
How to Save on Gas and Electricity Bills
Compare Suppliers
When looking at How to Save on Gas and Electricity Bills the most obvious is looking at suppliers. It makes sense to get different gas and electric quotes from various service providers at least annually in order to ensure that you are getting the best possible deal. Having a property of your own is costly so it makes sense to try to save money where you can. If you stick with the same energy supplier and don’t shop around for the best deals it goes without saying you’ll be paying much more than you need to. These companies have a tendency to increase the rate each year and if you don’t shop around you could be spending more than you need to. The money saved can be put towards paying off other bills to make our life easier faster.
Before switching energy suppliers always check your contract. You don’t want to incur additional fees for cancelling early.
Loft Insulation
It’s important to make sure your loft is properly insulated. If your loft isn’t properly insulated it can lose a lot of heat. It will of course cost money to insulate your loft but then it will also mean your home will warm up faster and retain heat better meaning you’ll save on heating costs.
Double Glazing
So many still don’t have double glazing. It’s amazing the difference having it can make. Not only can you reduce the amount of noise from outside you can also insulate your home better. The better the home is insulated the less you need the heating on. The less you need the heating on the lower your bills will be.
Buying Energy Efficient Appliances
Another obvious thing to consider when thinking about How to Save on Gas and Electricity Bills is the efficiency of appliances used.
Buying more efficient models of appliances that use gas and electricity will automatically result in savings on your bills as the consumption will be less. You might not be able to afford the latest model but if you look out for the efficiency rating when making your purchase you won’t buy something that will be expensive to run.
Install a Smart Thermostat
This can help you monitor and control your energy use. It can give you more control over how much you spend. A smart thermostat can be used to control which rooms are heated so as not to heat rooms not being used. These smart gadgets can “learn” the amount of time needed to heat your home so can have the temperature you want at the time you need it. The great thing is you can control them from your home so can make sure your home is nice and toasty by the time you get back.
Another way to save on heating costs is to turn down your thermostat by one degree. Simply by doing this you could save £80 a year!
Use an Electric Heater
There are times you may need to heat just one room in your home. Heating the whole house doesn’t make sense if no other rooms are being used. In these instances, an electric heater may come in handy. It’ll heat up a room fast and at a lower cost.
Energy Efficient Lighting
Energy efficient lights can last around 12 times longer than traditional light bulbs. This means that you’ll be making savings on each of these lights you add to your home. Changing to these will save you money straight away. You’ll save even more if you don’t leave lights on in rooms no one is using. One of the most obvious and common things people do to waste energy.
Learn To Switch Off
Many of us have gotten into the habit of leaving things on standby. It’s a habit we should unlearn quickly. You could make a saving of approximately £30 a year by switching things off from the plug. That could be put towards a birthday or Christmas gift for someone.

Great tips. It has been so cold this winter at times hasn’t it, it’s hard to switch off but we all need to. Plus the fact we have been in lockdown so at home more. The bills are through the roof!

This is really useful thank you as we have just had a huge bill come through. I think its because we are at home so much both working and the kids have been homeschooling. And although I expected it, £330 for a quarter was a lot more than I thought!!!

These are great and helpful tips. Turning off the lights and even unplugging the appliances helps a lot to reduce our electric bill.
They sure can, it’s all a balancing act really.
This week I swapped energy suppliers. All together from switching my gas, electricity and broadband (which were with all the same company) I am now saving £157 a year! I also noticed my cooker putting the price up and noticed the seal had gone a bit on the oven. It was old and with a new one it’s saving me energy and money in the long run!

Really amazing tips in there, and I am taking a couple of these tips with me – smart meter and electric heating! All this while I haven’t really liked electric heating, but it does seems like a viable way to save on the bills!
The portable electric heaters are great. Rather than heating the whole house when no one is there simple heat the room you are in.
