Alara Oats

Not many people know that I am a fully trained medical herbalist. I love using herbs in my food and I generally just treat friends and family nowadays. I was very excited when I came across this company after being sent samples of their cereals. The first one I tried was

Maca’s Secrets Muesli 400g
and I loved it, even my eldest wanted to eat my breakfast.
It contains:
 100% Organic Ingredients: Oat Flakes(26%), Barley Flakes(22%), Dates Chopped(17%), Crispy Barley Flakes(14%), HOT! granola (oats, maca root powder [29%], apple juice, cocoa powder, ginger)(12%), Sunflower Seeds(6%), Pumpkin Seeds(3%)
It wasnt overly sweet but it was definately yummy. For those with a sweet tooth there are a range of other fab oats and museli breakfasts that are sure to excite your taste buds.
 Recently I was sent a 40g sachet of this:
Dreamy Oats Chocolate Organic Porridge 500g
Creamy and rich delicious porridge with real cocoa naturally sweetened with dates
100% Organic Ingredients: Oats Porridge(73.5%), Dates Chopped(16%), Cacao powder(5%), Banana flakes (very fine, almost powder)(3.5%), Cacao Nibs(2%)
 The smell was lovely, it was nice and chocolatey, but when I ate some I noticed it wasnt overly sweet, in fact the sweetness came from the dates not the chocolate. This is definately one all the dark chocolate lovers out there.
Alara’s products do NOT include salt, sugar or fat so brilliant for those that are dieting although if you are trying to lose weight also remember as with any other cereal watch the carbohydrate content as those sugars can sneak in without you realising.
For those that are environmentally conscious you will be pleased to know that their products have been Certified by the Soil Association since 1988 and are the first company in the UK registered with the Coeliac Society.
Having a breafast with oats is a great way to start the day, not only does it contain a great source of fibre which has been proven to reduce blood cholesterol but it also contains antioxidants that help lower blood cholesterol. To achieve beneficial effects you need to eat between 1.5 and 3 (42.5g – 85g) ounces of oats daily and combine that with a low fat diet. The fibre in the oats helps to make you feel fuller for longer so is great for dieters. It also helps to speed the passage of food out of the body to relieve constipation and maintain regular stools.
Oats also help control the release of sugars into the body, they slow down digestion and prolong absorption of carbohydrate into the blood so avoiding any major spikes in sugar levels and resulting in a slower release of energy, very useful for those with diabetes to avoid complications occurring.
Oats have an anti cancer effect due to natural chemicals called phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens have been linked to decreased risk of hormone related cancers such as breast, prostate and ovarian cancers. Research has shown that women who have a higher intake of fibre have a lower amount of oestrogens circulating in their body which is associated with a lower breast cancer risk. The fibres within the oats also reduce the risk of gastrointestinal tract cancers.
