Project Mc2 H20 Nail Science Lab

My girls are pretty girly.  They love make up, having their nails painted, dressing up and taking their little handbags with them when they go out.  At school they have a great science teacher who has helped encourage them to develop a love for science themselves.  We were really pleased to hear that Project MC2 are supporting British Science week.(10th to the 19th of March).  The annual celebration of all things S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics.

Project MC2 are passionate about encouraging more young people especially girls into these areas demonstrating that they can be fun and are not just for boys.  Their aim is to prove that being smart is cool as those that watch the popular Netflix show Project MC2 will be aware.  The Project MC2 super smart and chic heroines are back to take on more secret missions for top secret organisation NOV8 using their love of science and sky skills to help them complete their missions.  Two new seasons of the show were launched in 2016 with new products and two new characters.  This Spring will see the girls return to our screens with many new exciting S.T.E.A.M. focused products including the Project Mc2 H20 Nail Science Lab.

As seen in the Netflix original show Adrienne Attoms’ next mission is to use her cosmetic chemistry skills to formulate the perfect look for saving the world.  With the Mc2 H20 Nail Science Lab children can now perform this same cool S.T.E.A.M. experiment at home using just household ingredients.  By using a scientific process called hydrographic printing children can create amazing and unique marble designs!  It is very easy to use and can be applied directly to children’s nails or to the provided press-on nails with any combination of polishes that you own.

What is hydrographic printing?  A quick Science Lesson

This is also known as immersive printing and is in this instance when the nail varnish is added to the water and an object is placed on top – finger nails onto where the pattern from the floating nail varnish will transfer.  As the nail varnish is not as dense as the water it floats.  What is density – the number of molecules in an area, so the denser an object is ie. the more molecules the less likely it is to float.  Nail varnish has less molecules when applied in small amounts to water so this forms a thin layer on the water surface.  When we added the nail varnish in a large amount it would form a ball and sink as it is denser than the water (has more molecules).  This is why the instructions say to add one drop at a time.

Within the set you will find a multi-LED light up station with built-in nail dryer, three stands with holders for your nail polish, three discs with blank nails to design, adhesive stickers, four science pipettes, one design stick, and one clear beaker. Batteries and nail polishes are not included.  Detailed instructions are provided.

You will need 3 AA batteries.

Here is how we got on:

As you can see we had great fun doing this.  Having done this for the first time in the video we have learnt from this as mummy used quick drying nail varnish as that was what she had.  Next time we plan to use normal nail varnish and see the difference.

As you will see from the video we changed the way the masking tape was applied to the fingers as this was far easier and meant the tape stuck better and cover more of the skin.

This seemed to work pretty well and we didn’t have to remove much excess nail varnish from around the nails.

I was a little apprehensive at first about using the kit but only because I wasn’t sure how easy it would be to use and was a bit worried about messing it up.  Thankfully the product was so simple to use I didn’t get a chance to make a mess of it which was a good thing as that would have been embarrassing, phew!

The results were good and we look forward to experimenting with this again.  We now want to see if Vaseline works well around the nails to prevent the nail varnish sticking.  What do you think will it work?

This kit is for ages 8+ and makes a great gift to help encourage children to have fun with science.

We were sent a Project Mc2 Circuit Beats to review.  This awesome kit allows you to make music out of all sorts of items from tulips, glasses of water and even ice cream.

The girls decided they wanted to make music with bananas.

You can chose from one of 5 sound options using the dial on the board: drums, guitar, piano, cat meow or even record your own.  Simply attach the grounding wire to your finger and then tap the objects with the other hand to play music by completing the electrical circuit.  A great educational toy that helps teach little ones about simple electrical circuits and also about electrical conduction.

How cool does that look!

The best part is that one lucky reader will have the chance to win one of their own.
