Cafe Rouge Christmas 2016

Many restaurants have been introducing their Christmas and New Year menus recently and just like them Cafe Rouge has some tasty offerings appearing on theirs.   I popped along one day when Cafe Rouge Southgate were inviting people to try their tasty festive food and drink that will be available over the Christmas period.

Drinks included; Winter Berry Lemonade (lemon, blackberry, elderberry and raspberry), French Garden Fizz (elderflower petal, fresh mint, lemon and lime juice) both of which are non alcoholic and plenty of other mocktails, soft drinks, cocktails and wines to choose from to go with your meal.  Mr Squishy loved trying these and made good use of his draw (straw).

We sampled the Salmon Rillette starter: A rustic pâté of smoked and cured salmon, lightly flavoured with shallot and chives, served with caper berries.  It was delicious and full of flavour and one we would highly recommend.  It’s a great size for a starter dish too and the caper berries complimented it nicely.

The pigs in blankets (found on the turkey on the Christmas Party and Christmas Day menus) were delicious and had a mustard seed dressing which added a nice and different addition to the flavour.  This was very easy to finish and although the portion we had was a reasonable size they were that good that we wanted more!!!!

Mushrooms au Gratin: Chestnut mushrooms in garlic and cèpe Mornay sauce with a chive and Gruyère crust (starter) were lovely and creamy and pretty tasty too. It’s also suitable for vegetarians and can be made gluten free to according to the menu (although I’m guessing it is).

The Tomato and Harissa (starter) Lightly spiced smooth tomato and harissa soup with chives is perfect for vegetarians and has a fair amount of flavour to it.

We didn’t get to try any main meal items apart from the sausages which were part of a meal but we did get to try some of the desserts.

The Creme Brulee: Caramelised vanilla crème was lovely and the Tarte au Citron: Lemon tart and crème fraîche was also nice.  I’ve often been to Cafe Rouge for tea and cake with friends as the atmosphere is normally quite lively yet relaxed and it’s a great place for meeting friends.

All in all the food that we sampled and the drinks were good and we would visit again, hopefully over the Christmas period time permitting.

You can find the Christmas and New Year menus on the Cafe Rouge website.

Cafe Rouge has a Great New Children’s Menu, Plus get a Free Children’s meal!

Set up in 1989 to bring the true taste of France to the UK, Café Rouge offer chef created dishes and the finest of wines to tempt every palate.  The only drawback in the past for me was their children’s menu until now.  Café Rouge recently launched a NEW children’s menu and in my opinion this may be their best one to date!

My girls are some of the fussiest eaters you could ever come across or at least to me they are.  The worst thing is that many a time they won’t even eat the same thing so we can have fun and games at meal times.  This can cause me problems if I want to take a break from cooking one evening and get someone else to do the hard work for me.  The new menu has enough variety to cater for, yes, even my daughters fussy tastes and made feeding my daughter (affectionately known as the animals on occasion) so much easier and less stressful, yaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy.

The children were given a menu with stacking crayons and selected their main meal from the menu.  They then set about colouring to their hearts content which kept them distracted whilst mummy and her friend browsed through the adult menu.

Even getting the children to eat their 5 a day is made that much more doable with the starter that comes with all the meals.  This consists of a warm fougasse bread finger with crudités (cucumber, carrots and tomatoes) and a tomato dip.

My little ones tucked straight in and loved it.

They polished off the lot!

Adult Starters

Ceviche de Saumon

This was a deliciously tangy dish with a great fresh flavour.  The salmon has been cured in lime juice and mixed with chilli, coriander and red onion.   You could quite easily order two of these and have them as a light lunch. (It’s not a spicy dish).

A classic favourite baked in garlic and smoked chilli butter.

For the mains the one of my daughters opted for the pesto pasta, a quick blow and this forkful vanished!

The other Chicken Goujons.

These are freshly made and not greasy.

They both really enjoyed their meals and both children requested returning to the restaurant even before we had reached dessert (great news for me).

Adult Meals

Boeuf Bourguinion

This had a rich sauce that was full of flavour and contained a good amount of melt in the mouth beef cubes that were not fatty.

Fillet Steak

This was a monster piece of meat but I persisted and managed to get through it with the addition of the amazing garlic butter and peppercorn sauce, thankfully that all I had eaten that day was half a grapefruit.

By this stage our tummy’s were feeling quite satisfied but as we all know dessert is a separate stomach so naturally we had to have some, it wouldn’t be right not to.

The children’s menu has a lovely selection to choose from the most popular from my girls choices was the ice cream (6 different flavours) which came with your choice of either popping candy, jelly beans or marshmallows.

ice cream

The girls opted for the jelly beans and were in their own version of dessert heaven as they happily chatted and rammed spoons full of ice cream into their mouths.

Adult Desserts

Fondant aux Chocolats

Rich and chocolatey with an oozing centre this is sure to delight any chocoholic.

Tarte Tatin

I simply adored the classic dessert with its gorgeous marriage of sweet vanilla ice cream with caramelised apples.

We all have a very enjoyable meal at Cafe Rouge near Holborn station, the staff were fantastic and this was probably the most relaxed and easies meal out with the children I have had.  I’m hoping to have many more now I know where to go.

The 3 course children’s meal costs £6.95 (including a drink) but up until the 31st of July 2015 children eat FREE!!!! (T’s and C’s apply).  To take advantage of this FAB offer all you need to do is download this voucher ‘here’.
